5U: Serge VCS

This week we gonna present you: Serge VCS in 5U.

The Serge VCS module from bananalogue is an extremely versatile control voltage generator and audio source. In the early 1970s, Serge Tcherepnin developed the Positive Slew and Negative Slew modules for the original Serge synthesizer. In time these merged into the classic Dual Universal Slope Generator. The Bananalogue VCS is an adaptation of Serge’s original circuit with a few new features.

Nowadays, a PCB is available from Ken Stone, however, my version was built with a PCB set from bananalogue which was available from him itself.

5V Power ???

While searching for my DC power supplies for 5V DC i had the glorious idea of using the USB 5V for the MB808 Testing. 50mA should be fine from the Apple. If there would be a short or power drain, then the Apple would block the port. Glorious Idea at 1:24 morning.

New Modules

Since the weather has become ugly i am returning to my workbench. As you might have seen on diy.czmok.de i am currently working on a wire-out of a FOCUSRITE Octopre. My GSSL is currently at a forum member for fixing and finishing ( as i’m lacking time for everything and i really want to start making music ).

Today’s module work is the DFA-930 Inverter+Multiple from Bridechamber, it’s now sitting near the modular as i used JB Weld to glue the holders, so i am finishing this module tomorrow (wiring stufF).

In the meantime i look again into the MB808 issues, as why i am not getting +5V on the rail.

As i couldn’t afford (and wont) a real TR808 and TR909 Combo i started to acquire the TR9090 kit besides the MB808 i am working on. This takes substantially more more, but i’d really like to see those two kicking.

Also, my acquired AudioKontrol 1 from NI arrived. Working good now, after i realized updating(tm) the drivers to the recent one brought me a lot of segfaults, so i stick to the original driver to use it with SL 10.6.1.

With the _older_ driver the box is awesome, low latency, and i really like the Guitar Amplifier emulations (despite i don’t play guitars of any kind) but as well the soundscapes with the supplied Kore Player. I am now stuck between two worlds: analog – and – digital . Modular Synth User and Laptop Fighter.

I am reworking my whole internet pages to get those a bit better organized. All content related to my hobbies will go to diy.czmok.de, the blog will stay here and i’ll integrate most stuff into the Wiki on DIY including all interesting files (Front Panel) and construction notes for various projects.

Sidenote: Server is now upgraded RAID5 baby!

I am still sorting out stuff i dont need anymore (or will probably never work with), so i am busy doing cleanups. The two cases from MOS-LAB have arrived, i will mount the (also in the meantime) received rack rails from bridechamber.com into those when i find spare time for it. Also i remember getting the replacement switches for the H910, so i’ll head over to studiorepair.de later this week to get those fixed as well as the EL foil on the acquired Lexicon MRC for my LXP1/LXP5.

Regarding my modules (and needed repairs): i have stockpile of work in my primary job, so i assume it will be in the next months rather than weeks when i got those fixed. I know which ones are broken, and mostly i ordered the missing/broken parts already.

Not much to tell about. I am offline the whole weekend for Gear’n'grill in Fischbach. The best weekend of the year coming up. I am currently packing up my modular synthesizer into the rented van and up there we go. I am taking lots of pictures for sure (like many other people).

The weather is actually _really_ nice, so no clouds and lotsa sunshine.

No. It’s neither a boy nor a girl It is a vocoder i recently acquired from another DIY builder. Some facts about it:

10 bands of voice character control; 1/4″ mic input; -20db attenuator switch for mic; +20 to +60db attenuator knob; 1/4″ instrument input; -10db attenuator switch for instrument; 0 to +40db attnuator knob for instrument; Remote switch for voice bypass; toggle switch for mic or instrument on bypass; toggle switch for effect bypass; Balance or wet/dry control; Master volume control; Headphone level control: 1/4″ headphone output; Guitar amp output (buffered instrument output); L-M-H amplifier rotary switch; 1/4″ main output; 1/4″ vocal output (buffered mic output);

I really like the design of this vocoder (and as well the demo). I will make some demos once i pickup the unit. Currently it’s in transit, but it is already in germany (according to my tracking information from USPS). I _could_ use the vocoder from Ableton Live, but that is not the same (which of course you know as an analogue music lover). I think this purchase will add nicely into the studio and complete the current setup for a while. I have about 3-4 PCBs to finish (from the modular synthesizer) and to wire up about 10 projects, but them i am thru with all the soldering ( finally after around 4 years ) so it’s really time to do something constructive, meaningful out there.

So… If you know a website designer who’s like to design my elektrolabel.de website, i am more than happy to share some ideas; it would be more for honor and good design than for money (as i dont have much available for this project), but we’ll see…
